Give a little more and a little better this Valentine's Day

February 12, 2015

Hugs and kisses and an "I Love You" or two are all that really matter on Valentine's Day. But let's be honest, a material token of affection won't exactly be turned away!

Flowers and chocolates are wonderful and traditional gifts exchanged this holiday, but there are other, more meaningful ways to invoke the spirit of love and caring.

Here, just a few ways to make the day of love even more heartfelt:

Donate a gift

Instead of flowers and chocolate, consider making a donation to a cause your sweetie really cares about. Or give them a charitable gift card, and let them have the pleasure of giving. Back up your words with a donation to thank the people or organizations that are making a difference in the world.

Give thanks

Words as we know are very powerful. And a simple "thank you" can do wonders for a person's spirit.  Say them to your child's teacher or school bus driver, your letter carrier, and anyone else who helps throughout your day. Want to give a little more? A little bag of cinnnamon hearts will widen that smile!

Raise funds

Look for nearby fundraising dinners in support of causes you care about, be it art, development or local good works and enjoy a special dinner out with your loved one. You'll no doubt meet some wonderful, engaged and caring people, which may well be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Make the effort

With the first day of spring a bit more than a month away, charity runs and rides will be here in no time. Start training now and help your heart while helping others and ensuring you'll be there for those you love for many years to come.

Learn to save

Lives, that is. Many organizations offer one-day First Aid and CPR training courses that teach the basics of assisting people in distress. There is no greater gift than saving a life or helping someone in a time of crisis.

Give and get

If you're still looking for a little token of affection, consider buying fair trade or shopping with retailers who make donations with every item sold. Jewelry retailer Brilliant Earth, for example, donates 5% of profits to help communities adversely affected by unethical practices in the jewelry industry. Eyeglass retailer Warby Parker donates the equivalent of a pair of glasses for each pair sold. Similarly, TOMS donates a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair sold. And through the (Red) initiative, major retailers donate proceeds from the sale of certain products to fight AIDS.

We at AniZet Designs think that these are all worthy initiatives. And we're inspired to do our share -- 10% of every greeting card or art print we sell will go to one of our local children's charities.

Happy Valentine's Day!
